WELCOME TO NO NEED(LE) TO WORRY
having a dental injection
Some people like to know what will happen when they have treatment.

When you have treatment at the dentist, sometimes you will need a numbing injection,
so that the treatment is comfortable for you.

This part explains what might happen before, during and after treatment with a numbing injection.

There is a comic strip that shows you what might happen when you have your treatment too.

I would like to know what a dental injection is for and why I need one A dental injection is used to numb your mouth with a liquid called local anaesthetic before you have dental treatments like fillings or having a tooth taken out. Local anaesthetic is a kind of numbing medicine. It makes dental treatment more comfortable. Some dental treatments would be very uncomfortable without the numbing medicine. Your dentist needs to make sure that the numbing medicine works on your whole tooth. To make sure this happens, your dentist needs the medicine needs to reach the bottom of your tooth. The only way to make sure the medicine can reach the bottom is to use an injection.
I would like to know what might happen BEFORE my dental injection Your dentist will talk to you about your treatment and how the numbing medicine will feel. On the day of your appointment they might put some numbing gel on your gums, which will stop your gums feeling as much. The gel needs to be left on for a few minutes so it can work properly.
I would like to know what might happen DURING my dental injection If you had some numbing gel on your gum, this will be wiped off. The dentist will use their mirror to look inside your mouth, and you will feel them stretching your cheek or lips. When you have the numbing medicine, you will feel a pushing and it might feel a little cold or tingly. Some people feel a tightness, like someone is squeezing your tooth, and some people feel like they have a lump in their mouth as the medicine starts to work. It's important that the dentist can give you enough numbing medicine so you can have your treatment and be comfortable. Sometimes this means they have to do this more than once, but they will only do this if it's really needed.
I would like to know what might happen AFTER my dental injection Once you are ready to go home, the dentist will tell you how long the numbing medicine will last. Usually the medicine takes a little while to finish working, so your mouth will feel numb/tingly when you leave. Your dentist will give you some information about how to take care of your mouth while the medicine is wearing off.
